Hermetic Modular Alchemy Lab
A 12HP stereo Eurorack DSP module platform from Hermetic Modular, a new brand, covered by Synth Anatomy. $299 introductory, $389 MSRP, available now, skiff-friendly. T3 — the site’s usual editorial news treatment rather than a hands-on review, so the specs are the maker’s and nothing here is measured.
This is the spoke’s first Eurorack hardware. The format entered the corpus as software (vcv-rack, rackdroid) and had been touched from the edge by korg-nts-4‘s Eurorack-level inputs; the standing open question asked for the hardware, its panels and its economics. All three arrive here.
What it is
Built on the Electrosmith Daisy — STM32H750, 480 MHz, 64 MB SDRAM, 16 MB flash — with stereo in/out at 96 kHz / 24-bit. The panel carries 6 potentiometers, 3 buttons, 10 jacks, 6 firmware-controllable CV ins/outs (assignable from the SDK rather than fixed in the circuit), front-panel USB-C for MIDI, a microSD slot, 102 individually addressable RGB LEDs, and a rear SPI/I2C header for expanders and sensors.
A built-in motion recorder / parameter-lock engine records up to 4 seconds of motion on every pot — the same idea a groovebox calls parameter locks (akai-mpc-one-g2), applied to a modular panel.
Two first modules ship for it. ECHOA is a stereo dual delay/reverb: four delay lines per channel from 1 ms to 16 seconds, four degradation engines (digital, BBD, tape, vinyl), and a Schroeder reverb built from four-stage all-pass diffusion. SPAGYROS is a performance processor with a three-slot FX chain — DJ filter / bit crusher / riser, then chopper / beat repeat / reverse, then phaser / echo / space.
The routing thesis, turned inside out
modular-routing holds that character lives in how blocks are wired, and Eurorack is the canonical case: the patch cables are the instrument. The Alchemy Lab keeps the format and moves the wiring inside. One 12HP panel is a delay, or a three-slot performance chain, or whatever the SDK compiles — the same six knobs and ten jacks re-labelled by firmware. Even the CV jacks are soft: which signal a socket carries is a software decision.
So this is a Eurorack module whose patch points are physical but whose signal path is code. It sits against vcv-rack as the mirror image — VCV puts an unbounded patchable architecture in software with no panel at all; the Alchemy Lab puts a fixed panel in a rack and makes the architecture behind it reloadable. Between them the two halves of “modular” come apart: the physical patch and the reconfigurable topology turn out to be separable, and each can be had without the other.
That also lands it squarely on analog-vs-digital. An analog module’s character is its circuit and can’t be otherwise; here the character is a binary you flash, and the hardware is deliberately generic.
One substrate under several brands
The article’s comparison set carries more than the specs do. Noise Engineering’s Versio / Alia / Legio platforms and Bastl’s Kastle 2 are named as the comparable SDK-based modules — “they are also based on the Daisy.” So a cluster of boutique modular brands, each sold on its own identity, are running the same commodity DSP board underneath.
That’s the digital bargain visible at the business layer rather than the sound layer. Once the sound source is software, the board stops being a differentiator and the brand becomes the panel and the code — industrial design, jack layout, and DSP authorship, over a part anyone can buy. Whether that converges Eurorack’s digital corner the way Chromium converged browsers, or whether panel and firmware carry enough identity to prevent it, is the thing to watch.
The open-source claim, precisely
The quoted claim is narrower than the headline: “Every hardware abstraction layer of the Alchemy Lab module is open-source, hackable, and yours to extend.” That is the HAL — the layer an SDK developer writes against. The article confirms an SDK exists but does not state the license, the programming language, whether the hardware design files are published, or how firmware is loaded onto the module.
Recorded as a gap rather than assumed. The spoke’s existing open-source corner is specific about this (polyuanalog is MIT with board files; minichord publishes its hardware), and “open-source platform” covering only the abstraction layer would be a materially weaker claim than either. Needs the project’s own repo to settle.
